Difference between galvanized steel and Corten steel

What is weathering steel?
Corten steel is a high-strength, low-alloy steel that is commonly used to create outdoor sculptures, including large structures such as the Angel of the North and bridges. The name COR-TEN refers to two of the steel's distinguishing characteristics: corrosion resistance and tensile strength.

What is Galvanized Steel?
Galvanized steel is the product of a unique process called hot dip galvanizing. This process involves dipping steel into a molten zinc bath at a temperature of approximately 450 °C to coat the surface of the steel with a layer of zinc. During this process, a metallurgically bonded coating is formed that protects the steel from corrosion both internally and externally.
This material offers excellent durability and low maintenance requirements, making it a common choice for outdoor applications such as galvanized planters, gates, fences, railings, and street lights.

Corrosion
Corrosion resistance is one of the most remarkable properties of Corten steel. Over time, Corten steel develops a unique patina on its surface. This layer of rust is not a sign of degradation, but rather a protective barrier. It protects the internal steel from further corrosion, thus greatly increasing the durability and longevity of your Corten.

Galvanized steel also offers impressive corrosion protection, though it does so through a different process. In the hot dip galvanizing stage, steel is coated with a thin layer of zinc, which creates a protective barrier against rust and corrosion. This layer of zinc ensures that galvanized steel is strong and durable, easily resisting wear and tear from environmental exposure.

The durability of Corten steel and galvanized steel is largely influenced by geographic location and environmental factors. But one thing is certain: these materials are built to last. Whether you choose Corten steel for its rustic appeal or galvanized steel for its industrial appeal, you can rest assured that the material you choose will serve you well for decades.
